EGOIST, Toronto Premiere, TORONTO JAPANESE FILM FESTIVAL
“A satisfyingly textured, bittersweet character study infused with warmth and energy.” - Screen international
Kosuke, a 30-something fashion editor, engages the professional services of physical trainer, Ryuta. The two fall in love, but Kosuke discovers Ryuta secretly works as an escort to provide for himself and his mother. Kosuke also grows close to Ryuta’s mother and concocts a plan to release him from his hidden life. When tragedy strikes, the two grow closer and must confront a new future together.
Powerfully acted, unsentimental and often explicitly erotic, Egoist tackles a necessary topic at a time in which LGBTQ rights in Japan are at the fore of public discourse.
